Career Advisement Tools
Please encourage your students to visit the Office of Career Services early in their tenure at NYIT. Here are some tools you can use to provide career advisement to your students:
- Career Plans: Suggestions for each student's academic year that will help in the development of career plans and preparation for for successful careers.
- FOCUS Online: Students in NYIT 101 (College Success Seminar) must complete this online career planning program, which is available to all students and enables them to:
- assess their current career status and planning
needs
- assess their interests, values, skills, and
personality
- explore careers that match their assessments
- explore careers that match their education
- map out realistic goals and plans
- identify training and development needs
- O*NET, developed and maintained by the U.S. Department of Labor, features constantly updated information for more than 1,000 job titles. It lists characteristics necessary for specific career areas related to interests, work values, and abilities as well as a list of knowledge and skills (i.e. critical thinking, writing, etc.) needed for specific jobs. All you need to do is click on "What It Takes."
- What Can I Do With My Major? is a listing of majors linked to potential careers.
- Online job search tools include:
- CareerSearch: A research database of more than 4 million employers worldwide (including contact information, Web sites, maps, competitors), searchable by industry, location, and key words. You can create an account using NYIT's referral ID: NYIT1955.
- Vault Online Career Library: Exclusive online access to more than 3,500 employer profiles related to NYIT academic majors, including energy, media and entertainment, health care, marketing, and technology. Includes water cooler message boards and career guidebooks.
