The Office of Career Services welcomes NYIT faculty and staff and encourage you to utilize the practical information and tools to assist you in advising students. By working together, faculty, staff and Career Services can ensure the transition from student to a member of the work force is as seamless as possible. Think of the path our students take to their professional career as a camping trip. We know faculty and staff do an outstanding job of filling the students' backpacks with knowledge and skills they need to thrive once they reach their destination. The Office of Career Services provides the maps and compasses, and serve as guides for students conducting career exploration. Here are some the services we offer:

• We help students find the “right fit." We can help students determine the right career for their interests, career goals, skills, values, and personality. During their academic careers, students return to us to develop essential job-search skills. We are a student's best resource for job outlook, salary, and employment trend information.

• We know employers who want to know you. The Office of Career Services works directly with employers, who often ask for the contact information of faculty members who could help them to identify top students. And if you have contacts within organizations or companies you think we should be engaged with, please let us know.

• Our career fairs attract many recruiters to one event. Our fairs provide excellent opportunities for students and faculty to meet companies in their industries of choice and establish a network of contacts.

• We assist in identifying quality internships. Internships are such an important part of your students' overall educational experience. Through our network of employers, we can help your students identify internship opportunities that will best serve them in their academic and professional pursuits.

• We help students master the job interview. There is no better way to prepare for the job interview than by experiencing an "actual" interview. At the Office of Career Services, our staff or recruiter volunteers will conduct mock interviews with your students, then provide a constructive critique of their performance and effective interview strategies.

• We can "fill in" when you cannot meet a class by presenting a career related topic. Let us “pinch hit” for you by scheduling a career services workshop. Staff members are available to conduct a wide variety if workshops for your students, including:

• Career Plans: Suggestions for each student's academic year that will help in the development of career plans and preparation for for successful careers.
• FOCUS Online: An online assessment and occupational exploration tool (enter keycode nyit) which is available to all students and enables them to:

  • assess their interests, values, skills, and personality
  • explore careers that match their assessments
  • explore careers that match their education
  • map out realistic goals and plans
  • identify training and development needs
• O*NET, developed and maintained by the U.S. Department of Labor, features constantly updated information for more than 1,000 job titles. It lists characteristics necessary for specific career areas related to interests, work values, and abilities as well as a list of knowledge and skills (i.e. critical thinking, writing, etc.) needed for specific jobs. All you need to do is click on "What It Takes."
• Online job search tools
  
  • CareerSearch: A research database of more than 4 million employers worldwide (including contact information, Web sites, maps, competitors), searchable by industry, location, and key words. You can create an account using NYIT's referral ID: NYIT1955.
  • Uniworld: Two multinational business directories that allow you to search for U.S. firms operating in foreign countries and foreign firms operating in the U.S. Contact information contains headquarters, branches, subsidiaries, and affiliates.
