Nearly 70 higher education professionals gathered on Aug. 19 for a daylong workshop on outcomes-based assessment at NYIT-Manhattan. Guest speaker Samuel Ratcliffe, Ph.D., president-elect of the National Association of Colleges and Employers, discussed strategizing, measuring, and reporting learning outcomes. His audience included student affairs personnel from NYIT as well as nearby universities and colleges.
"How clearly aligned is the work you're doing with institutional priorities and goals" asked Ratcliffe to his audience. "We must step back and shape our story through a stakeholder lens."
His presentation discussed changes in the higher education field and how they are shaping the need for new assessment strategies. Ratcliffe explained the 3M approach to developing successful learning outcomes, which calls for them to be meaningful, measurable, and manageable.
"If you're going to do assessment, do it well because you will be redirecting most of your resources, especially your time," he advised.
