Seven M.B.A. students at NYIT-Vancouver served as volunteers at Vancouver’s inaugural SociaLIGHT conference. Yatin Patil, Rahul Jadhav, Guan-Ru Huang, Digpalsinh Chhatrasinh, Kiran More, Zi Qin, and Anudeep Nalla were proud to represent their university at the gathering of entrepreneurs, innovators, and business students looking for inspiration. The “LIGHT” in “SociaLIGHT” is an acronym which stands for “Leader Impacting Global Humanity Today.”

Taking the chance to attend the conference, the volunteers took up jobs such as assisting with conference registration, distributing programs, manning an information booth, managing VIP gifts, and even wrapping cookies for audience members. They also got to sit in on several sessions, hearing from acclaimed business leaders.

Zi (Sissi) Qin had the opportunity to meet Noriki Tamura, the Japanese-born Canadian entrepreneur behind Vancouver's Japadog food outlets. “I spoke to him in Japanese and told him that I really enjoyed his lecture,” she said afterward. Sissi said she learned that “even though you can’t speak the language well or may not entirely understand the culture, you can still find success. You must be passionate about your idea, and be persuasive.”

Many NYIT-Vancouver students come to Canada in pursuit of an entrepreneurial vision, and events like SociaLIGHT give them encouragement and a chance to network. The volunteers also gained experience in navigating a major Canadian business event.
