The Counseling and Wellness Centers offer short-term individual and group counseling for students experiencing personal, academic, or social concerns. We provide crisis intervention, as well as resource and referral information. Students may be referred off-campus for specific therapeutic needs. Workshops and group discussions are offered on a regular basis.

Why do students come for counseling?
Students come for counseling for a variety of reasons. Students usually consider counseling when they are experiencing some level of emotional discomfort.

Do I need to have a serious psychological problem to go to counseling?
No. There are many reasons students seek out counseling. Some students go to counseling for only one or two sessions to discuss a relationship concern, such as a roommate conflict. Other students attend counseling for a longer period of time to resolve a more serious issue. The counselors are there to listen to any concern or problem a student has, regardless of how “small” or “large.” The Counseling and Wellness Center is a safe place to go to feel listened to and understood.

What happens during a counseling session?
During an individual counseling session, a counselor meets one on one with a student. During the first meeting, the counselor gets to know the student and discusses the presenting concern the student wants to share. The counselor listens to the student’s concerns to help clarify the issues they present. Together, the student and counselor discuss strategies and options as a means to resolving the issue of concern.

Will others know that I attended counseling?
No. The Counseling and Well Centers abide by the strict professional ethics and laws protecting confidential information. Your confidentiality is protected within the boundaries of the client/counselor relationship. Certain limitations to confidentiality do exist if a counselor has a reason to believe that there is imminent danger to you or to others. These exceptions are extremely rare. All policies related to confidentiality are discussed with you at the time of your first appointment.

How do I arrange to have counseling?
You can schedule an appointment for counseling by either calling the Counseling and Wellness Center on your campus of choice or going to the office in person. The counselors try to schedule appointments to accommodate your schedule when possible. Walk in appointments are accommodated whenever possible.
