Depression

Depression is a mood disturbance characterized by persistent, recurring feelings of sadness. This may be experienced as emotional flatness, inability to find pleasure in activities that used to bring pleasure, or a feeling of helplessness and/or hopelessness. There is a broad range of symptoms that may be experienced and can include the following: neglect of responsibilities and appearance, difficulty concentrating or focusing, poor memory, irritability, pessimism, exaggerated self-blame or guilt, loss of self-esteem, withdrawal from family and friends, sleeping disturbance, such as early-morning wakefulness, sleeping too much or insomnia. Other symptoms may include chronic fatigue or lack of energy, unexplained physical complaints such as headaches, backaches, stomach pain, etc. Some individuals may experience recurrent thoughts of death or recurrent suicide ideation. If an individual has a suicidal plan, it is necessary to seek help immediately.
