Coming from a small town to Old Westbury, NYIT has helped Nicole come out of her comfort zone and excel tremendously. From saying hello to new people and making new friends the campus offers a variety of experiences. Attending engineering based high school Nicole researched schools that had an Engineering Program and came across NYIT.

After starting school she went to a club fair and found The Student Government Association (SGA). After speaking with representatives Nicole joined and became a Junior Senator. Continuing with SGA, Nicole ran and became the president as a senior. Through this campus participation Nicole has acquired essentials skills. “NYIT has a lot to offer. Before starting NYIT, I never thought I’d be able to make a difference in such a big community. The staff and faculty at NYIT has given me the tools to go out into the work force and become a successful young adult.”

Nicole enjoyed her major required course; she has enjoyed other types of classes NYIT has to offer. Taking the course “Detective Fiction” as an elective allowed Nicole to meet other students outside of her major. It was a nice break from Engineering course and it provided her with an opportunity to do something she loves; reading!

Nicole’s favorite Engineering Class is IENG 590 (Energy Policy and Economics). “This class helped me gain an understanding of how much energy the world consumes. I was able to learn about a number of ways to preserve energy as well. This is very interesting to me because I hope to one day go into Environmental Engineering.”

Nicole describes her NYIT community as extremely supportive. She mentions, “Everyone wants each other to do well and succeed”. Nicole credits two staff members that have inspired her. Marisol Bazile, Assistant Dean of Campus Life always offers great advice. Nicole considers her a second mother figure. Another faculty member is Mehtap Donuk, Assistant Director of Student Activities 7 Leadership Development. Both have seen her grow and change and fostered her learning.

After graduation, Nicole is considering getting her Master’s Degree in Environmental Science. In the next 5-10 years she envisions herself having a job in her field. Using the skills she acquired from NYIT she will use these skills to start her career.
