May 9, 2016

On April 22, New York Institute of Technology and the Empire State virtual branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) hosted a Leadership Development Conference. AAUW-led workshops included tips on salary and benefit negotiations as well as information on the gender wage gap, the steps involved in salary and benefit negotiation, and budgeting. Participants were taught to:

  • Calculate basic living expenses for a recent college graduate.
  • Determine the starting salary they would require upon graduating.
  • Research average salaries for positions they were applying to.
  • Use negotiation strategies and techniques during role-play exercises.

New York State District Council Coordinator for AAUW Joan Monk led a conversation on feminism, while Amy Bravo, Assistant Dean of NYIT Career Services, spoke about resources NYIT has available for students.
