NYIT Engineering Degree Program Approved for United Arab Emirates

May 20, 2015

The Commission for Academic Accreditation of the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has issued initial accreditation for New York Institute of Technology’s (NYIT) Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. NYIT is now accepting applications for the first group of student-engineers to complete this program in Abu Dhabi, to start in September 2015.

NYIT’s School of Engineering and Computing Sciences is an area of strength for the university in both New York and its global campuses in Canada, China, and the U.A.E. Like all NYIT degrees offered in Abu Dhabi, the mechanical engineering degree is accredited in both the United States and the U.A.E. NYIT is the only American university in Abu Dhabi to offer a mechanical engineering degree program to all qualified applicants.

Mechanical engineers are in demand in many market sectors, from design to the manufacturing and operation of systems that form the backbone of every economy. Sectors include:

  • Energy and off-shore platforms
  • Water and electric power
  • Automotive and aerospace
  • Construction and civil structures
  • Biomedical devices and healthcare technologies

With advances in hardware and software systems integrated into its mechanical engineering curriculum, NYIT educates versatile engineers capable of further growth in industry or in graduate education.

“Offering mechanical engineering in Abu Dhabi is part of NYIT’s strategy to provide a range of in-demand, career-oriented programs to support the U.A.E. economy," said NYIT Provost Rahmat Shoureshi, Ph.D., who is also an engineer. "The U.A.E. will continue to need mechanical engineers across various sectors, including the construction and petroleum industries, and NYIT graduates will be prepared to accept those roles. With the introduction of micro- and nanotechnologies, NYIT mechanical engineering faculty members are at the forefront of innovations in developing new engineering systems. We are delighted to be part of building prosperous economies and high tech industries to further grow the U.A.E. technologically and to educate its required workforce.”

In addition to the new engineering degree, NYIT students in Abu Dhabi earn bachelor’s degrees in interior design and business administration. The university also offers master’s degrees in information, network, and computer security; instructional technology; and business administration. At its New York campuses, NYIT offers 90 degree programs, including undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees in more than 50 fields of study. NYIT-Abu Dhabi students can pursue these degrees through the “Gateway to New York” program, with core courses offered in Abu Dhabi and advanced courses in New York.
