Nesma Galal Wins The 2015 Angelo Donghia Foundation Scholarship

July 9, 2015

Nesma Galal, a fourth-year interior design student in the School of Architecture and Design, has been awarded the prestigious Angelo Donghia Foundation Scholarship for 2015. Galal is one of the 14 candidates selected from students attending accredited programs in schools around the country.

The scholarship holds a monetary value of up to $30,000 and will cover her senior year tuition and expenses. Galal's submission, Urban Sidewalk Sanctuary was created for her furniture design course.

The project required that she base the design on a previously designed interior furniture piece. She chose the Harp chair by Jorge Hovelskov. Her research of the chair and it's interesting threading system and seamless joining of the back and legs resulted in a design that would accommodate a variety of people in an outdoor setting on the sidewalks of the Chelsea art gallery district.

Galal is the fourth NYIT student to win this prestigious award in the last five years. Students Stacie Krug received an award in 2014, Melanie Li Foo Wing received an award in 2011 and Adam LoPorto received a scholarship in 2010. All four projects submitted were conceived and developed in Professor Robert Allen’s Furniture Design studio (DSGN 420) that is run every fall on NYIT's Old Westbury campus and spring on the Manhattan campus.

The Angelo Donghia Foundation, Inc. was established by Angelo Donghia, the internationally recognized interior designer. The foundation launched the scholarships in 2002 to award deserving students who are entering their senior year in an accredited Baccalaureate Degree Program in interior design.
