C.W. Post rallies past women's volleyball 3-2

Old Westbury N.Y. (Oct. 6, 2009) – The NYIT women’s volleyball fell to rival C.W. Post 2-3 in East Coast Conference action tonight. The Bears jumped out to a 2-0 led wining the first two sets by the scores of 25-21 and 25-22, but the Pioneers rallied by winning the final three sets 17-25, 16-25 and 10-15.  The loss drops the Bear’s record to 6-11 overall (1-3 ECC), while the Pioneers improves to 8-8 overall (4-1, ECC).

In the first set the Bears and Pioneers played to a 12-12 tie before NYIT went on a five point run to take an 18-13 lead.  Post would respond with a four point run of their own to cut the deficit to 20-18, but this was a close as the Pioneers would get as the Bears held on for the 25-21 win.

Just like the first set, both teams traded points and the second set was tied at 9-9. The Bears broke open a 16-9 lead with a seven point run behind the hot serving hand of senior Shelby Klein (Orange, Ca.). The Pioneers responded and outscored the Bears 11-4 to take thier first lead of the set, 20-19, but NYIT rallied once again and earned the 25-22 win.

The third and fourth sets were all C.W. Post as the Bears lost their offensive rythym.

In the fifth and deciding set the Bears fell behind 0-4 and weren’t able to overcome the deficit. They went on to lose the set 10-15.

NYIT sophomore Emily Syers (East Meadow, N.Y.) had a team high 38 assists and was second on the team with 16 digs. Sophomore Tugce Sirdas (Istanbul, Turkey) led the offensive attack for the Bear’s with a team high 19 kills. This also tied the match high with C.W. Post’s Kirsten Taylor. Sophomore Lisa Peacock (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had a team high 19 digs.

The women’s volleyball team will return to Recreation Hall to host ECC foe Queens College on Oct. 8, 2009. The match is schedule to start at 7 p.m.
