Cesare pitches perfect game as Bears split with Bloomfield

Old Westbury, N.Y. (April 13, 2009) – Senior Nina Cesare (Whitestone, N.Y.)  threw her second perfect game of the season as the Bears salvaged the second game of a double header, winning 8-0 in the mercy-ruled contest. Bloomfield won the opener 4-1. The split moves the Bears to 27-16-1 on the season and puts Bloomfield at 20-7 overall.

Bloomfield took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as the first two batters of the inning reached safely against NYIT starter, freshman Michelle Rapp (Hammonton, N.J.). Bianca Cosme attempted a sacrifice bunt and the ball scooted through the infield, allowing Vickie Berardi to score for the first run of the game.

In the second, Bloomfield’s Nicole Cagnino hit a solo homerun and Berardi added an RBI double to give the Deacons a 3-0 lead.

The Bears finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth as consecutive doubles from Lia Lara (Tucson, Arz.), and Ashley Gosk (Bay Shore, N.Y.) brought Lara home.

Bloomfield added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to stop any comeback by the Bears. Rapp took the loss for the Bears, allowing five runs, four earned, on 11 hits in 6.1 innings of work.

The second game was a completely different story as Cesare breezed through the Deacons lineup, not allowing a hit or walk while striking out seven in five innings. The Bears offense opened up a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Brooklyn Fields (Aurora, CO) doubled home a run and RBI singles from senior Brilynn Fields (Aurora, CO) and junior Lisa Boystak (Lindenhurst, NY) gave the Bears a 3-0 lad.  The Bears also added runs when Martha Redondo (Tucson, Arz) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and two more came home on a fielding error and a wild pitch.

Brooklyn Fields gave the Bears a 7-0 lead as she sent her ninth homerun of the season over the center field fence in the fourth inning  and Gosk’s RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth scored Redondo and ended the game on the mercy rule.

The perfect game was Cesare’s second of the season and she has also thrown one no-hitter as well.

The Bears return to action tomorrow as they host an East Coast Conference double header with St. Thomas Aquinas beginning at 2:30 p.m.
