Community Service

Assisting others is a big part of the athletics program at New York Institute of Technology. The NYIT athletics department is committed to actively participating in the community through a variety of outreach events and services. Student-athletes from all 12 intercollegiate athletic programs participate in a wide range of service and outreach programs in and around the New York/ Long Island area. All NYIT student-athletes are expected to participate in several community service projects throughout the year. Each NYIT athletic team is required to participate in at least one community service project per semester. Community service is as much a part of the players' education as their classes and sports involvement. Annually, NYIT student-athletes spend more than 1,000 hours in community service projects.

"Community service is a tremendous opportunity for our student-athetes," said head men's soccer coach Carlos Del Cid. "It really helps them understand what it means to give back to the local community and it provides quality time for each program to bond off of the playing field and outside of the classroom."

NYIT's athletics teams aren't just competing in their sports. They are mentoring children in schools with sports clinics, reading at neighborhood elementary schools, visiting with senior citizens, and cooking dinner at The Ronald McDonald House. The student-athletes at NYIT are committed to enriching the surrounding communities through service with their time and efforts.

Goals of community service performed by NYIT student-athletes are multi-faceted and are aimed at:

  • Promoting the image and identity of the campus within NYIT and in the community
  • Facilitating the integration of the intercollegiate athletics department and student-athlete into the NYIT community
  • Providing learning experiences for student-athletes, including leadership and team building
  • Providing role models and mentors for other students and young people in the community who might not otherwise aspire to attend a college or university.
