Baseball sweeps double header from Albany

Old Westbury, NY (March 16, 2010) – The NYIT baseball team swept a double header from the University at Albany this afternoon, winning by the scores of 2-1 and 5-2. The Bears rallied in the opener, scoring the wining run in  in the bottom of the eight inning and senior Mike Roth (Rockville Centre, NY) earned the win in relief. In the nightcap, junior Preston Wasmund (Ajax, Ontario) went the distance, throwing a seven inning complete game, while allowing just two earned runs to earn his first win of the season.  The victories improve the Bears to 2-3 on the season, while Albany drops to 0-9 overall.

In game one, the first six innings turned into a pitchers duel as NYIT starter, senior Andrew Guarassi (Long Island City, NY) threw six scoreless innings and Albany starter Kasciem Graham allowed just one run. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as Graham balked with runners on second and third.

Gurassi, who struck out nine batters through the sixth inning, ran into trouble in the top of the seventh, allowing a one out single and then walking a batter with two outs. Jeff Welsh followed with the game-tying hit, delivering an RBI single to center field. Roth relieved Guarassi and struck out the next batter with the bases loaded to get out of the jam.

Roth threw a scoreless inning in the top of the eighth and senior Brian Smith (Nesconset, NY) led off the bottom of the inning with a single to left field. Junior Effrey Valdez (Flushing, NY) was intentionally walked with two outs and Smith came around to score when the Albany shortstop threw wide of first base trying to execute a double-play on junior Christian Dienna’s (Old Bethpage, NY) groundball.

In the second game, Albany took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Keppler drove in a run with an RBI single to right field. The Bears would respond in the bottom half of the second inning with four runs to take a 4-1 lead. Freshman Vincent Caposio (Long Island City, N.Y.) started the inning with a single down the left field line. Sophomore Dane Hardy (Willingboro, N.J.) followed with an infield single to move Caposio to third base and sophomore Steve McNamara (Levittown, N.Y.) drew a walk to load the bases. Junior Jerry Smith (Nesconset, N.Y.) drove in McNamara and Hardy with a single to give the Bears a 2-1 lead and freshman Dan Lackner (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to deep right field to score McNamara. Jerry Smith then stole second, and scored on Brian Smith'sdouble down the first base line,

NYIT would add an insurance run in fifth when freshman Robert Loftus (Massapequa, N.Y.) pinched hit for Hardy and smacked a single into left that scored Christian Dienna (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) to give the Bears a commanding 5-1 led. Albany plated a run in the top of the seventh inning with two outs, but Wasmund settled down and got the final batter to groundout to end the game.

The Bears will return to action this Thursday, March 18, when they travel to play Hofstra University at 3 p.m.
