Cumulative creditsare calculated by adding all completed credits. The number of semester hours of credits earned for a course corresponds to the number of academic hours of instruction in a standard week. Semester hours of credit are granted for the grades of A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, or P. For example, students who earned an A grade for a 3-credit course and a B in a 3-credit course, accumulate 6 cumulative credits. Students who earned an A grade for a 3-credit course and an F in a 3-credit course, accumulate 3 cumulative credits.
Quality points are awarded in accordance with the grade scheme listed in the catalog. For example, an A grade is worth 4 quality points. Students who earn an A in a 3-credit course accumulate 12 quality points, i.e. 4 quality points x 3 credits = 12. A grade of B+ in a 3-credit course will accumulate 9.9 quality points (3.3 x 3 = 9.9).

Cumulative GPA represents all the quality points earned during all the semesters a student has attended NYIT divided by the number of credits for those courses where the grades of A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, F, IF, or WF were received. For example, students who earned an A grade for a 3-credit course (4 quality points x 3 credits = 12 quality points) and an F grade for a 3-credit course (0 quality points x 3 credits = 0 quality points), have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 (12 quality points / 6 credits = 2.0).
Students who have earned a C-, D+, D, W, F, IF, WF, or PR in a course may retake the course for credit (one or more times) to earn a higher grade. Only the higher grade will be used in computing the cumulative GPA. The other grade(s) will remain on the student’s record as a matter of information. Repeating courses may impact eligibility for financial aid. Students should consult with a financial aid advisor before registering for a repeated course.
