Social Sciences

The social science department provides an integral part of NYIT's core curriculum. You'll learn the way our government works, you'll read the great philosophers from the Greeks to the present day, and you'll study the historical framework for today's world. The department offers two degree options:

Social Science Education

The social science department collaborates with the School of Education to offer rigorous content study for students preparing to be teachers of Social Studies in grades seven to 12. The sequence of courses in social sciences provides students with the solid knowledge base in U.S. and world history, government and politics and philosophy they will need to teach in secondary schools.

Political Science

Government is an ongoing institution that will always require specialists to work within its agencies, as well as to teach and report its functions. Political science specialists often work in various positions -- elected and appointed -- in federal, state, and local government. They also choose careers as law enforcement specialists, foreign service officers, journalists and teachers. Political science provides an ideal educational background for law school.

Your NYIT degree will prepare you to work in government agencies and private business. Because so many areas of political science require advanced education, you'll also be prepared for graduate study in a variety of disciplines in the social sciences.
