Placement exams determine your skill and knowledge of English, reading, and mathematics. Their results will not affect your admission to NYIT, so don't worry about how you'll do on them. You might even "place out" of some introductory-level courses, or you may require additional assistance in certain academic areas. Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions about placement tests.
Who should take placement exams?
All entering first-year students must take placement tests in English, reading, and math. Transfer students without transfer credit granted by NYIT for English and mathematics also need to take a placement exam.
What are the requirements for international students?
All international undergraduate freshmen are required to take the English placement exam. Those students who score below a 550 on the TOEFL written test, a 213 on the computer test, or a 79/80 on the Internet-based exam also are required to take the English placement exam. Students who score below a 6 on the IELTSs exam must also take the placement exam. For placement exam test dates or to schedule an appointment, e-mail the Office of Admissions or call 516.686.7444.
International graduate students who score below a 550 on the TOEFL written test, a 213 on the computer test, a 79/80 on the Internet-based exam, or below a 6 on the IELTs exam are required to take a proficiency exam and must e-mail NYIT's English language coordinator or call 516.686.7686.
When are placement exams offered?
In general, placement exams are offered during the summer, just before classes begin, and during the first week of each semester. When you are accepted to NYIT, you will receive information regarding specific dates for tests.
Can I be exempt from placement tests?
Yes. If you have previous college credits or AP credits in English or math, you may be eligible to skip the tests. In addition, all B.S./D.O. students are exempt. Call 800.345.NYIT or e-mail the Office of Admissions about your individual situation.
What should I bring to the test?
All placement exams are computerized. You can bring a dictionary to the English exam and a calculator to the mathematics exam. Scrap paper is provided but you should bring a pen and pencil to work out math problems.
How do I study?
There is no need to study for the placement exams since it tests your current skills and knowledge. If you'd like to see some sample questions, click here.
