Why is NYIT's tuition higher than SUNY?
State universities such as SUNY and community colleges receive significant funding from federal, state, and local governments. As a private institution, NYIT receives limited funding from the government and must rely on tuition, donations, and income from investments to operate. For this reason, private institutions such as NYIT usually charge higher tuition than public universities. But because NYIT is a private institution and does not rely on the government for its funding, it is able to provide high-quality facilities and other educational amenities.
Does NYIT raise its tuition every year?
Not necessarily. Part of NYIT's mission is to provide access to opportunity to all qualified students, and we are committed to keeping tuition at a reasonable level. Each spring, the NYIT Board of Trustees meets to determine whether a tuition increase will be necessary. Some years, tuition remains the same; in other years, a nominal increase is necessary, generally to match the cost of living. We are proud that our tuition is one of the lowest of any private college or university in New York state.
How much should I expect to spend on textbooks?
This depends on your academic program and your professors. Some programs require many textbooks or supplemental materials; others are dependent on in-classroom materials. However, you can estimate around $400 each semester.
Can you give me some estimates about how much it will cost to commute to NYIT?
Non-academic expenses for NYIT students who commute vary according to a number of factors—whether they drive to school or take public transportation, how many meals they eat on campus (check out the cost of NYIT's meal plans), distance traveled, and the frequency with which they will be on campus for classes and other activities.
I'm a senior citizen interested in completing a college degree. Do you offer a senior discount?
We certainly do, and we encourage students of all ages to complete their degrees at NYIT. Students age 65 and older are eligible for a nearly 50 percent discount on tuition for undergraduate and graduate courses. Please see Tuition and Fees for the current senior citizen tuition rate.
NYIT's tuition is higher than I can afford. Can I apply for financial aid?
Absolutely. NYIT offers a number of generous scholarships that are merit-based, and you may qualify for need-based grants and loans. The Office of Financial Aid offers a great deal of information.
