Presidential Lecture Series:
U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings

Greetings by NYIT-Abu Dhabi Dean Timothy Keating

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Timothy Keating. I am the Dean of New York Institute of Technology's Abu Dhabi campus.

I have the honor of welcoming you to NYIT's Presidential Lecture Series. This is the first lecture in the series to be offered outside the United States, and we are pleased that President Guiliano has chosen Abu Dhabi for this honor.

We have a number of distinguished guests with us this afternoon. First, of course, is our speaker, Secretary Spellings, about whom you will hear shortly. Next, our partners who have helped bring New York Institute of Technology's educational vision to the United Arab Emirates:

  • Dr. Tayeb Kamali, President and Chief Executive Officer Centre of Excellence for Applied Research and Training (CERT) and Vice Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology
  • The Director of the Higher Colleges of Technology
  • Dr. Ahmed Tabbara, Chief Academic Officer of CERT and Associate Director of the Higher Colleges of Technology

Thank you to CERT and the Higher Colleges for our ongoing collaboration, and for sharing this lovely auditorium for today's event.

And now it gives me great pleasure to introduce the President of New York Institute of Technology, Dr. Edward Guiliano, who will introduce our guest speaker.

Dr. Guiliano has been president of New York Institute of Technology for the past 9 years. During that time he has led NYIT to broad recognition as a distinguished institution of higher learning with firm national, global, and digital recognition. Under Dr. Guiliano's leadership, NYIT has been consistently ranked as one of America's best colleges. During his presidency, NYIT has significantly increased the size and quality of its diverse student body of more than 15,000 students, and he has opened NYIT campuses in the Middle East, Asia, and online to complement NYIT's hub campuses in Manhattan and Long Island.

Most recently, Dr. Guiliano spearheaded the development of a bold 2030 strategic plan, designed to position NYIT over the next 25 years as a model 21st-century global university. An eloquent spokesman and advocate for global higher education, Dr. Guiliano regularly speaks at international conferences on the themes of global education, educational technology, and sustainability, among others.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dr. Edward Guiliano.
