Annual Conference on Aging and Society:
Baby Boom, Baby Bust: Is Suburbia Ready for the Age Wave?

The first annual Conference on Aging and Society, organized by the NYIT Center for Gerontology and Geriatrics, was held on Sept. 18, 2008, the first Long Island conference to address this important theme. National and regional experts examined suburban aging, its extent and consequences, as well as discuss practical and sustainable solutions to better address the many emerging challenges and opportunities.

America's suburbs -- historically considered youthful and family-oriented -- are now finding themselves a fast-graying part of the aging landscape. The impending senior tsunami not only promises major socioeconomic and epidemiological consequences for Long Island and many other areas across the country, but also poses serious questions about the capacity of existing housing, transportation, health care, and other key community services to accommodate the age wave, no less sustain the excellent quality of life that has long characterized suburban living. If "demography is destiny," we must begin now to consider the many factors involved in creating an aging-friendly and aging-capable Nassau-Suffolk region.

Dr. Stephen M. Golant, a geographer and gerontologist from the University of Florida who is widely recognized for his foundational work on housing, transportation, employment, and other aspects of aging in metropolitan areas, delivered the keynote address Aging and the Changing Face of Suburbia.
