The Learning Center (TLC) offers tutoring in the majority of the introductory science, mathematics, technology, economics, business, and social science courses, except English. English tutoring is conducted at the English Writing Center located in Balding House on the Old Westbury campus or on the fifth floor of 1855 Broaday on the Manhattan campus. The following services and resources are provided at TLC:
Individual Appointment Tutoring
The majority of tutoring is conducted through individual sessions. This is suitable for a student who needs targeted and in-depth assistance on a subject with a qualified and trained peer tutor. Each appointment is usually scheduled for one hour and may be extended if there is a need. Students are limited to two hours of tutoring a week per subject. Appointments are ongoing, and students must attend all scheduled tutoring sessions.
Study Groups
Group tutoring is strongly encouraged because of the demonstrated positive learning outcomes. The center staff sometimes will organize group tutoring for students in the same class. This kind of session is usually facilitated by a more experience upper class tutor. A group can consist of two or more students.
Walk-in Tutoring
Walk-in tutoring does not require appointment or the completion of a tutor request form. This is a setting where a tutor may work in helping more than one student at a time in a variety of subjects of his areas of competency. This type of tutoring is suitable for a student to ask brief questions to a tutor on a specific subject. A walk-in schedule is available at the front desk.
