Become a Tutor

The Learning Center is continually seeking qualified and motivated work-study and non-work-study students to serve as peer tutors. Peer tutors are paid $9.50 to $10 per hour depending on education and experience.Work hours are flexible based on tutor’s schedule and subject needs. Tutor Qualifications

  • You must be enrolled at NYIT as an undergraduate, having earned 12 or more college credits, or be a graduate student with tutoring experience.
  • You need to have a 3.0 or better grade in courses they are tutoring and 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • An instructor must give you a recommendation.
  • You must be dependable, patient, and able to work well with diverse student population and staff.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills are necessary.
  • You will need to attend mandatory tutor training.

Graduate Assistant Qualifications

Basic qualifications may include previous tutoring and/or teaching experience, leadership skills, schedule flexibility, a strong sense of responsibility, and ability to relate to a diverse student population. In addition, a GA must possess good verbal and communications skills.

  • Fully matriculated, attending full-time in graduate studies at NYIT and have completed at least 1 semester.
  • 3.25 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
  • A recommendation from your Academic Advisor.
  • Personal interview with the Director of the Academic Enrichment Programs and The Learning Center staff.
