The ELI has five levels of language proficiency, from beginner to university level, and instruction in all language skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary, and in specialized fields such as business and technical communication. Placement is by examination.

Full-time program offering instruction in reading, writing, grammar, speaking, and listening comprehension.

Characteristics of American Culture
This course is designed for speakers of English as a second language who wish to improve their conversation as well as their writing and reading skills. The course examines beliefs, behaviors, and experiences that may be unique to the United States. Students read and discuss various documents (e.g., the Bill of Rights) as well as current essays. In addition, noteworthy TV programs, films, and speeches will be presented in class.

This course emphasizes stress and intonation, and the appropriate use of idioms. Students learn to use spoken language in social, professional, and academic settings. This course is designed for speakers of English as a second language who are somewhat fluent in English but need to improve their pronunciation skills. Students have the opportunity to practice the sounds of American English extensively with the guidance of a professional instructor.

It is primarily for graduate students who are studying computer science, engineering, environmental technology, or related fields.
