Courses Available - English Language Institute

The ELI has five levels of language proficiency, from beginner to university level, and instruction in all language skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary, and in specialized fields such as business and technical communication. Placement is by examination.

Basic English for Beginners/Advanced Beginners
Full-time program offering instruction in reading, writing, grammar, speaking, and listening comprehension.

Intensive Reading and Writing for Low/Intermediate Students
Students increase their reading comprehension by reading and discussing short essays and stories. Writing skills are developed through a variety of approaches.

ESLI - 096

Characteristics of American Culture
This course is designed for speakers of English as a second language who wish to improve their conversation as well as their writing and reading skills. The course examines beliefs, behaviors, and experiences that may be unique to the United States. Students read and discuss various documents (e.g., the Bill of Rights) as well as current essays. In addition, noteworthy TV programs, films, and speeches will be presented in class.

Advanced Reading and Writing Course
This course is designed for students who need to develop reading and writing skills in preparation for academic courses. Students read and discuss essays and short stories and learn the conventions of essay writing in a variety of rhetorical modes.

Advanced Course in Speaking and Listening Comprehension
This course emphasizes stress and intonation, and the appropriate use of idioms. Students learn to use spoken language in social, professional, and academic settings. In addition to participating in informal class discussions, students are expected to make formal presentations. Use of audio-video materials helps students develop listening comprehension skills.

The Sounds of American English: A Course in Accent Reduction
This course is designed for speakers of English as a second language who are somewhat fluent in English but need to improve their pronunciation skills. Students have the opportunity to practice the sounds of American English extensively with the guidance of a professional instructor.

Technical English
An advanced course that stresses the techniques and forms of scientific and technical writing for ESL students. It is primarily for graduate students who are studying computer science, engineering, environmental technology, or related fields. Students practice writing reports, manuals, memos, and analysis essays. In addition, students will learn the techniques of research and practice writing a research paper.

An advanced course that emphasizes the development of vocabulary and idioms used in the business world. It is primarily for students in the M.B.A. program or similar majors. American Culture in Film
An advanced course that introduces students to American culture as depicted in films. The course emphasizes the development of listening comprehension, verbal, and writing skills. In addition, students will learn the techniques of research and practice writing a research paper. This course is recommended for graduate students in communication arts, but any qualified student may register.

American Academic Writing
An advanced course on the writing conventions expected of students in American colleges and universities. Students become acquainted with the concepts of thesis and topic sentences, paragraph structures, and essay development. Students learn research techniques and practice writing a research paper. Throughout the semester, sentence structure and grammar rules are stressed.
