Advisors: What They Do
Faculty advisors should fill three roles for students:
1. They are resources, providing information about NYIT's academic programs and institutional requirements in order to assist students in developing the most coherent plan for their college years.
2. They are the liaisons between students and the NYIT community, referring them to and familiarizing them with services and resources NYIT provides.
3. They should assist students in understanding the nature and purpose of higher education and help them to develop responsibility for the direction and completion of their degree program.
Specific faculty advisor responsibilities include:
- Guidance in the selection of programs of study, construction of class schedules, and explanations of academic procedures
- Exploration of goals and plans pertaining to students’ academic and occupational future
- Serving as liaison to communicate the concerns of advisees to appropriate college personnel
- Meet with students at agreed time intervals for feedback and planning
- Practical supervision and monitoring of students’ academic progress
- Counseling in decision-making and the assumption of personal responsibility
- Referral assistance to trained or professional help with such things as psychological or emotional problems, career options, testing, and senior college information
