Advising on Non-NYIT Courses

In order to take courses at other colleges, NYIT students must:

  1. receive clearance from the Office of the Bursar and obtain the proper application form from the Office of the Registrar. (Students with an outstanding bursar balance will not be allowed to take courses at another college.)
  2. resubmit the application to the Office of the Registrar after receiving permission from the appropriate deans or designees, before taking any course at another college. Students who have not received permission will not have their transfer credits approved.
  3. have a compelling reason why this course cannot be taken at NYIT. The student’s advisor verifies this when signing the form.
  4. not take a similar course offered at NYIT during the same term (unless the student is attending a special program or lives more than 50 miles from an NYIT campus).
  5. determine that the course is equivalent to an NYIT course and that the college has an equivalent accreditation. The chair of department that offers the course at NYIT must sign the form.
  6. must take the equivalent of NYIT courses with numbers at or above 300 at a four-year college.
  7. have a GPA of 2.0 or higher; students on probation are prohibited from taking courses at other colleges.
  8. pay NYIT a per-credit fee for taking courses at another college.
  9. pay the other college directly all tuition, fees, and expenses.
  10. have a transcript sent to NYIT’s Office of the Registrar.
  11. obtain a grade of C- or higher in order to receive transfer credit. Note:transferred grades will be entered as TC (transfer credit) and will not be used in the calculation of the student’s GPA (although the grade may be used in calculating eligibility for graduate honors).
