Advising ELI Students

Placement and Proficiency Exam Requirements

  • All undergraduate students are required to take Compass, NYIT’s English placement exam.
  • Students who didn’t graduate from a U.S. high school or attended for less than three years must take the English as a Second Language (ESL) version of Compass and report to the English Language Institute (ELI) with the test results.
  • Transfer students are exempt from taking the placement exam only if they have transfer credits in college composition from a U.S. college or university. Non-credit ESL courses in reading and writing are not transferable anywhere in the United States.
  • Graduate students who score below 80 on the iBT version of the TOEFL, below 213 on the computer-based TOEFL, or 550 on the paper TOEFL must take an English proficiency exam. These students must make an appointment for the test with ELI.

Registration Procedures

Before signing any registration documents, check the student’s status. Students who have been accepted to the English Language Institute (ELI) are designated as "ELI Reg. (ND.ELI)." They have visas for language study and, according to government regulations, are required to take a total of 18 hours of instruction. The government also stipulates that these students are not allowed to take any for-credit course while they are in ELI unless they have written permission from the ELI coordinator. Send these students to the English Language Institute on their campus to have the registration form signed. Keep these procedures in mind:

  • According to government regulations, a student with an I-20 for language study must not be assigned to a credit-bearing English course.
  • After taking the undergraduate placement exam, students must report to ELI to have their scores evaluated. An ELI advisor will write the required English course on the registration form and sign the form.
  • International students (with an F-1 visa) who have been accepted into an undergraduate major may be required to take ELI courses in addition to academic courses because of placement test results. In this case, the government requires that they take a total of 12 credits and/or hours. Graduate students who are taking ELI courses must have a total of nine credits and/or hours to comply with the government’s definition of “full-time status.” The hours of ELI instruction count toward full-time status. If a student has insufficient hours to meet the government regulations, he or she should register for one or both of the ELI electives (ESLI 100 and ESLI 096). NYIT’s Office of Admissions limits ND.ELI students to six academic credits during the year.
  • Advisors should ask students for one copy of the permission-to-register form (pink copy) signed by an ELI advisor. This form indicates the course or courses the student is required to take during the first and second semesters. It also indicates how many major courses students are allowed to take while they are taking ELI courses. The student will also have a registration form signed by an ELI advisor.
  • If there are any exceptions to a full-time course of study (such as illness, academic difficulties or a student’s final semester), a full-time student certification form must be completed by the academic advisor and co-signed by the international student advisor from whom the forms can be obtained. Please be aware that an international student may receive a letter of academic difficulty one time only .
  • Students with academic I-20s may take only one class, or three credits, per semester online. Students with language I-20s may not take any online courses.
  • Undergraduate students are required to exit ESLI 086/087/088 before they are allowed to register for WRIT 110. Graduate students are required to finish the ELI sequence, which includes ESLI 595, 596 or 597 (see below).
  • An instructor may inform ELI that a student appears to be having academic difficulty due to deficiencies in English skills.
