Faculty should take the following steps when advising students:
1. Schedule a meeting with the student. Students should make an appointment with you for advisement. The Academic Calendar specifies advisement dates. Please ask students to bring a printed copy of their program evaluation, which is their degree map found on NYITConnect.
2. Ascertain the student's CGPA. Use the student’s program evaluation to determine his/her cumulative GPA (CGPA). If the CGPA is less than 2.0, advise the student on appropriate courses to register for and then refer the student to the Central Advising Center. (The student is probably on probation.) These students should repeat courses in which they have previously received F, WF, or IF grades. Depending on their probation level, students may be restricted to taking no more than 12 credits
3. Determine the appropriate courses for the student to take. Make sure courses apply to the student’s major (the program evaluation is helpful in determining courses the student still needs). Do not allow students to register for a course that has a prerequisite that they have failed. If you notice that the student is classified with a different major than what you are advising him/her for, make sure a Change of Major Form is filled out and submitted to the Office of the Registrar
4. Use NYITConnect to create a schedule for the student. NYITConnect will provide you with the status of a course (filled or open). It will also show you if a course requires a prerequisite, co-requisite, or special permission. Students may need permission from you in order to take certain courses. Please refer to the Permissions and Procedures quick reference chart for important instructions.
5. Open the student’s account to allow him/her to register online. Tell all students to check for restrictions before their Web registration appointments in order to resolve issues that may block him from registration. Students can do this by clicking on "View My Restrictions" on NYITConnect.
6. Remember to refer your students to the Office of Career Services for information on internships and to the Learning Center for free tutoring in courses that the student may find difficult.
