Advisement for Math Courses

All incoming students must take a placement exam in mathematics except for those who have transfer credit for a math course from another college OR those in the B.S./D.O. program.

Based on your major, the placement exam will initially assign you to one of the following:
  • MATH 096, Developmental Mathematics I
  • MATH 101, Developmental Mathematics I/II
  • TMAT 135, Technical Mathematics I
  • MATH 125, Finite Mathematics
  • MATH 141, Precalculus
  • MATH 151, Foundations of Calculus
  • MATH 161, Basic Applied Calculus
  • MATH 170, Calculus I
The following equivalences exist:
  • MATH 101 = MATH 096 + MATH 100, Developmental Mathematics II
  • MATH 141 = TMAT 135 + TMAT 155, Technical Mathematics II

Hence, a student who has taken TMAT 135 and TMAT 155 does not take MATH 141. Generally a student who completes developmental course(s) and needs to take MATH 141 will take the TMAT sequence instead. After taking developmental course(s), if required, students should take the following, according to their major, if needed:

School of Architecture and Design
  • MATH 141 (or TMAT 135)
  • MATH 161
School of Engineering and Computing Sciences
  • MATH 141 (or TMAT 135)
  • MATH 170
  • MATH 180
  • MATH 260, Calculus III
  • MATH 310, Linear Algebra
  • MATH 320, Differential Equations
  • Note: MATH 310 may be taken after MATH 180
  • Note: MATH 320 may be taken before/concurrently with MATH 310

School of Management

  • MATH 125
  • MATH 151
School of Health Professions, Behavioral, and Life Sciences
  • MATH 141 (or TMAT 135)
  • MATH 170
  • MATH 180, Calculus II
  • MATH 235, Applied Statistics

School of Education or College of Arts and Sciences students follow one of the above sequences (or part thereof) if students are required to take more than the core MATH 115 course.
