Advisement for English Courses

Follow the sequence below when registering for classes. Five courses (Composition One and Two, Group A and B, and Basic Speech), or 15 credits, are required for any NYIT baccalaureate degree.

All incoming freshmen and transfer students without Composition One transfer credits must, without exception, take the English Placement Exam before registering for any courses. Students who are placed into ELI courses must complete ELI requirements as directed before registering for English courses.

Sequence of Required English Courses (Core Courses)

Composition One

(Note: WRIT101 and WRIT111 carry equivalent Composition One credit)

(prerequisite: WRIT-100 or placement)

(prerequisite: WRIT-100 or placement)


Composition Two

(Note: WRIT151 and WRIT 161 carry equivalent Composition Two credit)

(prerequisite: WRIT-101 or TC Comp One)

(prerequisite: WRIT-111 or TC Comp One)

Remember: Before taking a Group A or B course, you must pass Composition One and Two (WRIT-101/111 and WRIT-151/161). Once you pass Composition One and Two, you may take Group A and Group B courses concurrently or in any order you wish.

* Generally, any student who has attended a U.S. high school for three years or less. Thus, ESL students may be graduates of U.S. high schools. Remember: NYIT ESL courses carry equivalent composition credit.
