NYITCOM Opens New Community Health Care Center in Uniondale

Old Westbury, N.Y. (May 29, 2014) - NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine is expanding its community clinical services with the opening of a health care center in Uniondale.

NYITCOM will host an open house and ribbon cutting at the new Family Health Care Center in Uniondale on Friday, May 30, followed by a family fun day on Saturday, May 31.

The new center, at 433 Uniondale Avenue, is the former practice location of Dr. L. Ade Benedict, a physician who has served the community for more than 30 years, delivering hundreds of babies, including stars of the group “Salt-n-Pepa” and musician Run DMC.  Benedict is Associate Professor and Chair of NYIT’s Division of Obstetrics/Gynecology with the Department of Medicine.

“This is true community-based care,” said Associate Dean of Clinical Services and Facilities Ronald Manning. “Our goal is to serve Uniondale and the surrounding community by providing access to high quality, affordable patient care.”

Drs. Sharon Koehler, Carlos Magalhaes and Brookshield Laurent will join Benedict at the new expanded health care center, offering breast health and family medicine services to the community. Third- and fourth-year osteopathic medical students will serve clinical rotations at the center.

NYITCOM currently operates a Family Health Care Center in Central Islip and an Academic Health Care Center at NYIT’s Old Westbury campus. The Academic Health Care Center houses the Adele Smithers Parkinson’s Disease Treatment Center.

Barbara Ross-Lee, D.O., and NYIT Vice President for Health Sciences and Medical Affairs and NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine Dean Wolfgang Gilliar, D.O., are among the featured speakers at the open house from 1 pm to 3 pm.  Brian Harper, M.D., Medical Director of NYIT’s Academic Health Centers will introduce the center’s doctors to the community.

On Saturday from 9 am to noon, the center will offer free blood pressure and BMI checks and free diabetes screenings at a community family fun day with music, raffles, and free T-shirts, coloring books, and face painting.
