NYIT Welcomes First-Year Medical Students

Dr. Barbara Ross-Lee

Old Westbury, NY (August 16, 2011)  ΜΆ  Maturity, sound judgment and the ability to ask for help are three essentials for success in medical school, NYIT’s vice president of health sciences and medical affairs told first-year medical students yesterday.

Dr. Barbara Ross-Lee welcomed 301 new students to the start of classes at NYIT's College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM).

“The patients want physicians who know when to ask for help,” Dr. Ross-Lee said. “That will carry you through your career.”

Dr. Ross-Lee also advised students to stay focused on goals and to take advantage of the school’s wide-ranging academic and global programs.

NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., told the group that world problems – including medical challenges – must be solved by thinking globally and acting locally.

“At NYIT today, we are at the forefront of globalism in higher education, and that includes having students from 106 nations and all 50 states of the U.S.,” President Guiliano said. “We understand the view that living and working effectively in today’s global society requires learning with a transcultural perspective.”

Most solutions to world problems will come from “collective and collaborative work involving government, universities, and business.”

President Guiliano added that he hoped the new students would consider future trips to Ghana and other countries with the Center for Global Health and other NYIT students. “Don’t be surprised if your traveling companions are architects and engineers in training from our other schools.”
