NYIT Tennis Advances to NCAA Sweet 16

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (May 5, 2014) - For the second straight year, the NYIT men's and women's tennis teams have advanced to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16 after winning their respective regional tournaments. Nationals will be held at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. on May 14-17.

The women's team, ranked 11th in the nation, heads back to the Round of 16 after a 5-0 victory over regional rival Chestnut Hill. Junior Sara Burinato (Barcelona, Spain), ranked 36th nationally, posted a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Charlotte Dawson at first singles to clinch the regional championship for the Bears. They will take on St. Mary's (Texas) in the opening round of Nationals on Wednesday, May 14. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

The men's team, ranked 19th nationally, also heads to the Round of 16 for the second year in a row behind a 5-1 victory over Chestnut Hill in the regional final. Freshman Rafal Charkiewicz (Opole, Poland) clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Anthony Moore at fifth singles. The Bears will face the winner of the Southeast 1 Regional, either GRU Augusta or Armstrong Atlantic) in the opening round on Wednesday, May 14. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
