Old Westbury, N.Y.  (October 20, 2011) – NYIT’s newest energy efficient technologies are saving the Old Westbury campus nearly $65,000 annually.

The new technologies are solar panels installed on the roof of the Green Lodge and the replacement of 3,025 light bulbs in three NYCOM buildings.  Sixty-five solar panels on the Green Lodge, home of The Campus Slate student newspaper and NYIT’s Telecommunications department and Help Desk, will produce about 25% of the building’s energy and save about $4,750 in annual electric costs.

The solar panel installation was led by alumni Matthew Mathosian of EmPower Solar.   While at NYIT, Mathosian was the lead architect in the university’s winning Solar Decathalon project in 2007.

The re-lamping project at NYCOM is expected to save nearly $60,000 annually.  The new light bulbs were installed in lobbies, perimeter areas, labs, offices, and classrooms in the Serota, Riland, and Rockefeller buildings.

John Eff, an NYIT alumni who teaches an online course in energy efficient lighting and a seminar on facilities management , said the new bulbs have a lower wattage but a brighter cast than the old bulbs because they contain a greater amount of reflecting material.

“This is a really nice savings for the school,” Eff said.

Both projects were funded by grants from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
