NYIT Grows Greener

Old Westbury, N.Y. (April 21, 2011) – NYIT will use cleaner fuels, install water-saving fixtures, and various environment-friendly practices on its Old Westbury and Manhattan campuses as part of a new partnership with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The university has submitted a draft memo to the EPA that outlines its commitment to implement additional “green” strategies to lower its carbon footprint and protect the environment. NYIT will work directly with the EPA on steps to reduce idling time of vehicles, use low-sulfur diesel fuel for its fleet, erect natural barriers on construction sites to prevent soil erosion, and install solar panels on its Green Lodge building.

The campuses already employ several environment-friendly strategies, including a bike share program, hybrid and electric vehicles, solar arrays, comprehensive paper and “e-waste” recycling, and energy-efficient light fixtures.  The memo, drafted as Earth Day is celebrated on campus and around the nation, is expected to be signed by the end of the month.
Nada Anid, Ph.D., dean of the School of Engineering and Computer Sciences, said the agreement “will give NYIT an official ‘green’ stamp.” She added: “It will allow us to partner with the EPA on the latest energy-saving technologies and shows that NYIT is committed to sustainability and a clean environment. This Memorandum of Understanding will not just represent a piece of paper, but will engage our entire community of students, faculty and staff in the study and application of environmental protection”.
