NYIT Cheers Success of NYIT-Nanjing Class of 2012

Nanjing, China (June 9, 2012) ─ Shengwei “Eric” Zhao is on his way to a career in networking and finance, but he’s grounded in philosophy and says his journey through college was a lesson in perseverance and resilience.

“Many of my professors gave me tremendous help and I learned massively from them,” said Zhao, adding that he also attributes his success to his work in improving his English, serving as a faculty assistant, and getting involved in academic and social activities.

Zhao is one of 311 students who graduated from NYIT-Nanjing today. In his keynote address, NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., urged students to innovate and cultivate an “interconnected mentality” as they join more than 92,000 NYIT global alumni.

“My NYIT education made me become a student with higher global awareness and vision,” said Zhao, who will pursue a master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania.

Zhao, an electrical and computer engineering major, noted that he flourished in part because one professor continually told him “live and learn,” while another made it enjoyable to learn about philosophy in between his other academic business courses.

“Philosophy puts me on the right track, both in academic performance and in my life,” he said.

Among his favorite memories is his research about medical imaging presented at NYIT’s research symposium in April. Zhao helped establish the International Student Language and Development (ISLAND) club for faculty assistants, and he organized meetings for students planning to study at NYIT’s New York campuses.

Zhao’s classmates have already obtained positions at China Mobile, China Telecom, and Jiangsu China Construction Bank, among other leading companies, while others will begin graduate coursework in China or the United States at institutions including NYIT, Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Duke, Johns Hopkins, and New York University.

Lu Hanting, who earned his B.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at NYIT-Nanjing, delivered the student address to his fellow graduates at today’s ceremony. NYIT Board Chair Linda Davila, NYIT Chief of Staff Peter Kinney III, and NYIT Director of Alumni Relations Jennifer Kelly also attended the ceremony.

NYIT-Nanjing’s graduation follows NYIT’s 51st commencement, which celebrated 3,325 graduates on Sunday, May 20, 2012, at the Old Westbury, New York campus. NYIT also has campuses in the Middle East, Canada, and Manhattan.
