NYIT-Nanjing Salutes the Class of 2013

Nanjing, China (June 10, 2013) ─ Today friends, family, and faculty cheered the 297 baccalaureate graduates of the NYIT-Nanjing Class of 2013, NYIT’s third cohort to graduate in Nanjing.

NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., conferred degrees during the ceremony held at the Xianlin Campus of Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NUPT), NYIT’s partner in the NYIT-Nanjing global campus, which opened in 2007. Degrees were conferred from the NYIT School of Management (Bachelor of Science in Business Administration - International Business); the College of Arts and Sciences (Bachelor of Fine Arts in Communication Arts); and the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences (Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, and Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering).

In his keynote speech, President Guiliano stressed that graduates’ investment in higher education would lead to prosperity on many fronts, and emphasized the value of connectedness in the networked 21st century. “No one moves in a straight line in a network; you move from one node to the next. You turn corners and often find surprises. Wrong turns can lead to the right endings. The more connections you have, the more paths open up and the richer your life becomes. NYIT has given you a wealth of these connections,” he stated.

He also noted that China’s economy is arguably the growth engine of the world, and that developing the country’s service sector requires a move toward high-value modern services, such as information and communication technology, finance, and professional business services. “Indeed, the service sector needs knowledge capital; it will demand a college-educated talent pool possessing critical thinking and analytical skills,” he told the graduates. “A college education puts you among future leaders of the service-sector economy, and at the frontlines of science and industry,” he added.

Sun Yuwen, who earned a B.S. degree in business administration - international business, delivered the student address to her fellow graduates at today’s ceremony. She will be starting in a position with the Jiangsu Province government following graduation.

Many members of the NYIT-Nanjing Class of 2013 have also secured employment, obtaining positions at China Telecom, China Post Bank, China Unicom, China Mobile, IBM, Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation, and Nanrui Group, among other leading organizations. Others will begin graduate coursework in China at NUPT, and in the United States at institutions including NYIT, Lehigh University, NYU Polytechnic, Stevens Institute of Technology, and the University of Southern California.

During the graduation ceremony, NUPT conferred upon President Guiliano its Honorary Doctoral Degree, in recognition of his significant social influence, academic achievements and outstanding contributions to the collaboration between NUPT and NYIT.

Also in attendance at today’s graduation were NYIT Board Chairperson Linda Davila, Campus Dean and Executive Director of NYIT-Nanjing Monique Taylor, Dean Roger Yu of NYIT’s College of Arts and Sciences, NYIT Career Services Dean John Hyde, and NYIT Director of Alumni Relations Jennifer Kelly.

NYIT-Nanjing’s graduation follows NYIT’s 52nd Commencement, which celebrated 3,215 graduates on Sunday, May 19, 2013, at NYIT’s Old Westbury, N.Y. campus. NYIT also has campuses in the Middle East, Canada, and Manhattan.
