Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. (5 June 2014) – A group of graduates, university leaders, and supporters gathered today at Abu Dhabi’s InterContinental Hotel to celebrate NYIT-Abu Dhabi’s Class of 2014. Twenty-seven bachelor’s and 10 master’s degree recipients were recognized for completing their degrees. They are now linked to nearly 100,000 NYIT alumni around the world.

NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., and NYIT Board Chairperson Linda Davila greeted and addressed graduates and their families. NYIT Abu Dhabi Campus Dean Garon Wheeler, Ph.D., and AmCham Abu Dhabi Chairman Matthew E. Byrd also participated in the graduation ceremony, with NYIT Vice President for Enrollment Management Ronald Maggiore, Ph.D., in attendance.

President Guiliano conferred the degrees, which are recognized in both the U.A.E. and the U.S. Six students earned Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degrees in Interior Design; 20 received Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Business Administration; and 10 earned the Master’s of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree. One graduate earned a B.F.A. in Communication Arts; Fatima Ahmed Alkhars studied at NYIT-Manhattan and elected to receive her degree during the NYIT-Abu Dhabi ceremony so that her family, who lives in the region, could attend.

Guiliano at podiumPresident Guiliano warmly congratulated the university’s newest alumni, reminding them to add human connection to today’s technological connectivity. Noting Abu Dhabi’s projected economic growth, in line with the “Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030,” he predicted that “some of you will find careers in fields not yet created, based on knowledge that does not yet exist.” Inviting the new graduates to “maintain [their] connection with NYIT,” he told them. “You now have family in almost every nation in the world—NYIT family.”

Mr. Byrd, an American who has lived in Abu Dhabi since 2008 and who is also the President and CEO of Gulf Alliance Company, a Perot Company, stated, “On behalf of the American Chamber of Commerce of Abu Dhabi, I am proud to support NYIT-Abu Dhabi, whose graduates possess the 21st century skills needed by the business community.”

Haji Sattar Mohammad Arif, an NYIT bachelor’s graduate, summed up the sense of excitement and wonder in the Class of 2014. Describing himself as “a totally different person” from the young man who started at NYIT, he offered thanks to parents, faculty, administrators, advisors, and friends. He discussed the “thin line” between confidence and over-confidence, and ended his remarks by stating, “Our biggest fear should not be that we are inadequate. Our biggest fear should be that we are powerful beyond measure.”
