NYC Department of Health and NYIT Host “Grade A” Event for Food Safety

New York, N.Y.  (October 16, 2012) –Top executives and professionals from New York City’s hospitality and restaurant industries joined students and faculty at a conference on food safety hosted by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and NYIT’s Department of Hospitality Studies.

The sold-out event gave more than 250 attendees the opportunity to discuss food safety processes and sanitation procedures.

“It’s important for everybody to realize they are part of a team,” said keynote speaker and restaurateur Marc Murphy, executive chef and owner of Benchmare Restaurants (Landmarc and Ditch Plains) by Marc Murphy and Benchmark Events by Marc Murphy. “You can't just have one person responsible for food safety.”

Murphy, who also serves as a judge on Food Network’s Chopped, said the NYC Department of Health plays a key role in the restaurant industry. “It's nice to know there is an agency looking out for the consumer,” he noted. “It keeps New York City the restaurant capital of the world.”

Robert J. Koenig, Ed.D., associate dean of the NYIT School of Management and chair of the Department of Hospitality Studies, said the event served as an example of NYIT’s commitment to connecting students with top industry professionals.

“What we did here supports our curriculum and NYIT's mission to providing career-focused education,” he said, adding that the university’s own undergraduate hospitality students helped plan the event under the direction of staff associate Stephanie Langdon, who earned her bachelor’s degree in professional studies and master’s degree in communications arts from NYIT.

“The attendees, which included people from four-star restaurants, also had the opportunity to interact with colleagues  in  food service,”  said Koenig. “This afforded them a greater understanding of New York City Department of Health standards and how to work with the agency to facilitate policies, codes, business, and communication. NYIT’s Department of Hospitality is a leader in linking industry partnerships with our curriculum to remain at the cutting edge of education.”
