“FlyGirl” Cheers One Mission, One Goal, One Team at NYIT

New York, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2011)Vernice Armour, the first African-American female combat pilot in the United States military, encouraged new students to “prepare for their passions” at the NYIT Auditorium on Broadway on Sept. 6.

Armour, who is widely known by the nickname “FlyGirl,” had already achieved her childhood dream of becoming a police officer when she shifted gears to serve two tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The former Captain in the United States Marine Corps shared her realization that life is about transition, and urged her audience to live and lead without regrets. She added that passions aren’t for keeping, but for sharing.

“You have a choice in how you engage every single moment in every single experience—find the purpose in your passion, then take the positive steps to bring your aspiration to life.”

She also urged incoming freshmen to “acknowledge the obstacles” they may encounter during their college experience, “but don’t give them power.” Armour encouraged new students to engage with the university community and to “refuse to settle even in the smallest moments,” citing her own experience in the military as evidence that solid teamwork, communication, and application to achieve can support this “breakthrough mentality.”

“I just know all of you sitting in this room are going to build things that will change the landscape of technology, the economy, and the way we live,” Armour said, praising the new students who stood out among more than 7,000 applications received last year. “Remember, there are only two ways to succeed: the first time, or again.”
