Chinese-Americans Share Research on Technology, Policy, Entrepreneurship at NYIT

ENCSS at NYIT's Manhattan Campus

New York, N.Y. (Aug. 22, 2011) — Working together, government and business can protect the environment and improve healthcare in the United States and China, a group of experts and students concluded as NYIT hosted the Environment & Public Health Network for Chinese Students and Scholars (ENCSS).

Nearly 60 young professionals and scholars came together at the Aug. 17-19 event to share research and examples of best practices. Distinguished speakers included New York City Department of Environmental Protection Deputy Chief Larry Beckhardt, United Nations Development Programme Director of Environment and Energy Veerle Vandeweerd, Ph.D., and Green Seal Inc. Vice President of Marketing & Research, Linda Chipperfield. Poster sessions and student presentation topics ranged from the role of non-governmental organizations in China to the design of bio-gas generators for homes and communities around the world.
 
“What was particularly striking was the marriage of their research—on electric vehicles, lead toxicity in children, access to health care for Chinese in the US, the insertion of environment issues in English language education—to health issues,” said Joanne Fox-Przeworski, Ph.D., chair of the group’s board of advisors.
 
Students who attended liked the “practical” emphasis on research that serves the community, according to NYIT Chinese Students Association President Zhijian (Derek) Tao. “Technique is just a tool and it can’t be separated from social work,” said Tao, also an officer of the Community Service Center and a graduate student in electrical and computer engineering.
 
The Environment & Public Health Network for Chinese Students and Scholars took the opportunity to welcome School of Engineering and Computing Sciences Dean Nada Anid, Ph.D., to its board of advisors. During the final day of the sixth annual meeting, held at NYIT’s Manhattan campus, organizers also announced the release of the group’s new professional journal, Advances in Global Environment and Health.
 
“The extreme positive feedback from our members gave us a great confidence in our efforts of uniting people for environment and health improvement—and preparing future leaders for better understanding of the importance of environment protection,” said Environment & Public Health Network for Chinese Students and Scholars President Xiaojun Lu, Ph.D. “Thanks to NYIT's support, this year's event was a great success.”
