NYIT Supports Student Scholarships, Honors Culinary and Oenological Leaders

New York, N.Y. (May 9, 2012)   ΜΆ  Thanks to its sought-after silent and live auction items, including exclusive wine and dining experiences, and entertainment, sports, fashion and travel lots, New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) raised more than $314,000 in support of student scholarships at its Gold Coast Classic held last Thursday evening. Since 1997, the Gold Coast Classic event has raised more than $5 million for NYIT students.

Also at the event, NYIT and co-sponsor Quarterly Review of Wines presented professional excellence awards to singular food and wine experts: Daniel Bruce, Distinguished Chef at the Boston Harbor Hotel; Chuck Wagner, owner and winemaker at Napa Valley, Calif.-based Caymus Vineyards; and internationally known authors and wine critics, Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher

NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., thanked the 200 guests at the Ritz-Carlton in Manhattan’s Battery Park for their support of NYIT students “who are preparing to embark on exciting 21st-century careers across the globe.”

He further commented that “scholarships make it possible for our students to continue their transformational NYIT education.” He cited the award-winning student designs from the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences and the creativity of School of Architecture and Design students selected to exhibit at the prestigious Milan Furniture Fair as examples of how an NYIT education prepares students for careers today and tomorrow.

Following Dr. Guiliano’s remarks, Christina Trotta, a second-year medical student at NYIT’s New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, told the audience that personal experience compelled her to become a doctor. She explained, “Thanks to the financial assistance I obtained through NYIT’s Health Careers Opportunity Program, I was able to enroll in NYIT. Today, I’m treating robotic patients … I’m learning about global health needs in Ghana, Haiti, and Ethiopia; I’m interacting with world-class teachers, lecturers, and researchers; and I’m preparing to use my NYIT degree to help underserved communities.”

She added, “I will be forever grateful to NYIT for giving me the skills and confidence to become an osteopathic physician.”
