Letter From The President

Colleagues:

NYIT’s 2030 strategic plan continues to demonstrate measurable results. Our 25-year roadmap will continue to allow us to navigate the world of 21st-century higher education and ensures that NYIT remains a top-quality, career-oriented college.

The decision to launch “NYIT 2030” a few years ago was an easy one—quite simply, we had no choice but to do so. We are living in a time of extraordinary change, and as rapid advances in research and technology are commonplace, educational institutions must transform themselves to meet the expectations of today’s global and knowledge-based economy. But change can be difficult and confusing if it appears accidental or whimsical. With the right plan, however, change can bring great opportunities and lay the foundation of a new legacy. I am happy to report that NYIT 2030 is unique to our institution and has provided the scope and motivation we need to embrace change and run with it.

Since embarking on our strategic plan, NYIT has implemented real-world customer-service practices that have allowed us to become even more student-centered. Our student support services have been studied and reorganized. New Enrollment Services and Student Solutions Center models provide more personalized, one-stop shopping services for admissions, payments, financial aid, and registration based on the call-center model in business. Facility renovations on all campuses have enhanced student life—from a centralized Office of Counseling and Wellness Services to additional services provided by the Office of Housing and Residential Life and NYIT Food Services. The Office of Career Services has expanded to offer an abundance of on-campus recruiting opportunities, career fairs, and larger internship programs. Last but not least—and no doubt you’ve already witnessed this just moments ago—we have relaunched the new NYIT Web site, which now offers dynamic, user-friendly navigation.

To better prepare our students for successful careers a la NYIT 2030, we have adopted an interdisciplinary approach that embraces both technology and cross-cultural solutions to the challenges of the 21st century. For example, our Center for Metropolitan Sustainability involves graduate students, faculty, and staff members from the College of Arts and Sciences, and the schools of Architecture and Design; Engineering and Computing Sciences; and Management. Through their efforts, we have been able to support a green campus program, build a home for the international Solar Decathlon competition, participate in conferences in New York and abroad, and conduct research in the fields of photovoltaics, hybrid vehicles, and other sustainable solutions. Also launched was the Center for Gerontology and Geriatrics as well as the Center for Global Medicine, both of which facilitate the exchange of knowledge and provide interdisciplinary opportunities for students in the health professions and other academic fields.

I would like to thank all the students, alumni, parents, faculty, and staff members who participated in the design and execution of NYIT 2030. This bold initiative would not have been possible without their help. I am extremely pleased with the progress we have made so far, though there is still much to be done. We urge everybody in the NYIT community to help shape the course of this institute and its role in defining 21st-century higher education. Please take a look around the 2030 Web site and let us know what you think.

Sincerely,

Edward Guiliano
President
